The N word

So today I was looking at a swear word list for a site I am building at work, I found quite a useful site here: http://www.badscience.net/?p=228 There is a useful section on how bad people see the swear word. I was not shocked by most, but the racial terms I was surprised actually came underneath the...

Bloons!

Wow, a news packed day, but this one deserves a mention because I have been addicted. I tend to shy away from web games, so when a colleague at work mentioned this I was skeptical, till I started, several monkeys popping balloons later and I was not going to stop till I got a super monkey to help. There are 50 levels. Try to put it down after starting, I dare you.

Crazy P

After my post on Seasick Steve and Ty, I thought I’d continue a write up on who else I saw at The Big Chill who has made me spend more of my hard earned cash on music.

Crazy P who hail from Nottingham, right here in blighty. Fantastic live, and really damn good on CD, vinyl or download (will they abbreviate this to dnld, dwnld or something so we can have CD, LP, DNLD? please?). I have been listening to their latest album “A Night On Earth” a lot recently. It’s difficult to say who they sound like, but here goes. Think a more sane Moloko I guess it the best description. It’s relaxed, or dancy, depending on your mood. Recommended. Some of their stuff has been remixed to some good house classics so chances you’ve heard some of their stuff without noticing.

Faceball

The web is a fantastic place, anything goes. “If you blink you might miss it” as the overused quote goes.

Recently I have noticed something about which has been developed, again, by our friends over at Flickr. This development comes in the form of an office game called Faceball, if, like me, you work in a vibrant atmosphere, or even if you don’t this is worth a try. I think we shall start trying. Why I probably wouldn’t Blu-ray just yet

There is a big format war going on AGAIN. And yes, Sony, amongst others is a big player, AGAIN. And that’s the problem.

So, in the red corner we have HD-DVD, in the blue corner a prototype sounding Blu-ray.

Blu-ray is technically superior, it fits a vast amount more information on one disc, which could mean better quality, and also more data when storing files from your PC, very nice. At the moment, however, this technical superiority is its downfall. Discs are more expensive to produce, and players more expensive to buy. In fact, this is starting to sound a lot like Betamax. A technically superior format to VHS at the time as it was better quality, another Sony backed format (are you seeing where this is going yet?). To top it all, VHS is said to have won that war because it was cheaper, and, lets face it, porn companies favoured it, and kids could get “video nasties“. Blu-ray decided to not favour porn companies, while very nice and clean, the human race is filthy and this could be a thorn in their side.

China bans reincarnation

I can’t believe this story:
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2007/08/29/reincarnation_ban/

There is something very very wrong with the Chinese government wanting Tibetan Buddhist monks to get permission for reincarnation. But I’m not here with a message of “free Tibet”, I’m more intrigued how they’d enforce this. Reincarnation police? Easiest job ever! Maybe I’m missing a point here.

Too orangey for crows? I just found out what Kia Ora means, through Flickr!

It means hello in Mäori! Next fact tomorrow, if I can find one.

My name in vain

Today I decided to check where my rankings were on a few search engines. I tried google, and, as usual, I have been knocked off the top by the author (where was he when I first started out on the internet?). I then decided to go to live.com, I clicked on the feeds button, I wish I hadn’t. Someone really hates the author Francis Gilbert, and also some judge. So thanks guys for making our name sound utter rubbish, you’re flying a flag here, a quite rare flag, at least try to keep people happy. If you can’t do that, then try and keep your rankings down to give the good guys a chance.

iPhone to Europe

I’ve never particularly liked Apple, they do great product design, now, granted, a nice looking OS, but that’s about it. The quality is decidedly shoddy, from terrible iPod and iPhone batteries to power cables melting, so not even shoddy in a “feels cheap” kind of way, but dangerous shoddy. Yet the fan base is constant, and Steve Jobs is well popular. Yet our Bill Gates, with his charity foundation is almost spat on (I no longer compare the 2 as Microsoft don’t make hardware as such).

My attitude to Apple has changed through the years, I do have an ipod (on my second, the last one broke down) and have considered a mac book as they are very nice. Which, many will tell you is a start for me. But each time I am ready to stop challenging the corporation, I read an article which makes me further wonder. And today it happened again, this time it’s with the iPhone and the European deals that are being struck.

10% of all data and voice calls? So now, it is a full priced phone, subsidised by the mobile companies (hence an extra long contract to have one), but every time you use it, Steve gets a nice cut, not even a small cut.

I’ve tried the iphone, loved it, but this is too far, surely? Next comes the slam from mac fans.

East london Breweries

I moved to East from West London about 7 months ago to Shoreditch, what a different place! There are good and bad points to both. While Shoreditch has more clubs/bars, it also doesn’t have the great ales anymore. I always thought East London would be an ale drinking man area, but then I realised. Both the London breweries I know of are from West London, Fuller’s & Youngs. Truman’s is long gone. Are there any other East London breweries? i can’t believe the area is now a Stella oriented area.

Horton Hears a Who

A few years back now (ok 10 years back) I bought a brilliant DVD. I had to buy it from the States. It was The Grinch. Not the Jim Carrey one, but the original animated one with the song that makes my year every time “You’re a mean one Mr. Grinch”. My friends and I have now made quite a tradition of watching this, singing and drinking port in the festive season. I was gutted when they made a feature film, but also intrigued. “How can they pan this one out into a feature length movie?” I asked. The managed, pretty badly, in fact terribly. I stick to the animated version.
